Steffen Lehmann

Professor Dr. Steffen Lehmann is an Internationally recognized educator, urbanist, architect, scholar, and strategic leader focused on urban regeneration, resilience, and climate change adaptation. He is Director of the School of Architecture and full Professor of Architecture at UNLV in Las Vegas, USA. Lehmann holds an AA Diploma (London), a Master’s degree from the University of Applied Sciences (Mainz), and a Ph.D. from the TU-Berlin. Steffen Lehmann is author of 20 books on sustainable design and urban issues. He became a licensed architect in 1993. Over ten years, he was actively involved in the urban creation of the ’New Berlin’. Most of his built work is the result of winning design competitions for historically significant places, including Potsdamer Platz and Quarter at the Museumsinsel. Before establishing his own award-winning practice Steffen Lehmann Architekten in Berlin, he worked with James Stirling in London and Arata Isozaki in Tokyo. Prior to joining UNLV in the Las Vegas in 2018, he was for 16 ears a tenured Chair Professor in Australia and in the UK, where he held a series of senior positions, including Director of Research. As Head of School, he was responsible for over 3,000 students and 200 academic, professional and casual staff, with offshore programs in Malaysia and Hong Kong. He led significant teaching reforms that improved student outcomes and increased research output by over 35% a year, and quality and impact by building on existing areas of strength. He held visiting professorships with UC Berkeley, TU-Munich (DAAD Professor), TU-Berlin, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Tianjin University, and at the NUS Singapore. In recognition of the international significance of his work, he held from 2008 to 2010 the UNESCO Chair in Sustainable Urban Development in the Asia-Pacific. From 2010 to 2018, Steffen was Founding Director of three successful research centers in Adelaide and in Portsmouth. His centres generated over $15m of external grants for research projects in 20 countries and published over 300 papers and articles. He has been a lead or co-investigator on over 20 research projects. He is currently Editor of a Routledge book series, and on the Editorial Boards of 6 academic journals. Since 2003, he has supervised 12 Ph.D. students and 3 post-doctoral fellows. Since 1993, he has given over 100 invited keynote addresses and over 400 invited seminars in 40 countries. He has been advising over a dozen cities worldwide on sustainable urban development.
